in a jamb with the saw

We have not managed to obtain the magic saw which will allow us to extract the floor from the bathroom cleanly, and flush against the wall, with depth control. Yes, it must be a magic saw indeed. Sure, a sawzall will do it, but there's no control and we really do not want to cut through the floor joists. At least, not all of them! We will be removing only 1, maybe 2, I think, but that's different. We would like the rest to stay as intact as possible. They are, ya know, holding up the house.

So this magic saw is sometimes referred to as an "undercut saw" and is similar to an angle grinder with a saw blade on it, which allows for depth control and slicing right against something. This miraculous tool will also allow us to cut out a board in the wall which protrudes out for no real good reason. Due to these 2 tasks - and the fact that they will need to be repeated for the next bathroom remodel - we decided it is worth it to get another tool. We have a lot of tools. Tools are fun. We like to buy tools, we like to have tools, we like to use tools. But, let's face it, the budget is not unlimited, so some care must be taken in tool purchasing decisions.

Now, this undercut saw, also called a jamb saw, is not sold at your regular stores: Home Depot, Ace Hardware, not even Ashby Lumber. We checked OSH, too. No go. This is clearly a specialty tool. It requires going to a specialty hardware store. The kind of store that does not usually deal with "end users" (if you'll allow the use of computer terminology), i.e., home owners, i.e. non-professionals, non-contractors. You can tell if a hardware store falls into this category by two tests: 1, attitude and 2, store hours M-F 8a-4p. In other words, they do not get a lot of "weekend warriors" and can be less than friendly. But it is the second - the hours - that has held up the purchase of the saw this week. Hopefully it can be acquired tomorrow morning with few snags.
