Hardibacker Hardly Handles

This weekend's progress: some shopping, some thinking, and some putting up hardibacker. For the record, Hardibacker (tm) sucks. Just score it and snap it. Uh-huh. That works sort of okay for large pieces of the 1/2 -inch board, but is completely ineffective for small strips, which prefer to break apart where they please.

"Father, " said in the best imitation of Ben Stiller's character in Zoolander, "I have the black lung." Or gray lung in this case. The lawyers are all over this cement board - you're not suppose to breathe the dust, but no matter what you do, it creates dust - whether it's scoring it, snapping it, or screwing it into place - dust, dust, dust. Great.

That said, we got the shower wall up - looks pretty good. It's possibly easier to see our vision now: the niches in the shower, the 3 valves on the right (green), and the body jets. Body jets!! Did I mention recently that this is going to be an awesome shower?!

Of course, no shower is allowed without a curb. Our curb will be incorporated into a step. But still, there is the curb. The curb was a huge pain in the ### with all the thin strips of hardibacker. But it's done now. We also covered the front of the tub corral and the corner recesses with the cement board.

Now we are nearly ready to install the shower floor. We got the crazy new Kerdi shower stuff. It's not the exact right size for our custom shower, so we'll need to use some cement to make up the difference, but it should make things a little easier. Take a look: the shower floor: completely waterproof and ready to install with a little thinset.

The Kerdi stuff is waterproof membranes and crazy shower drains which will hopefully make our install foolproof and water-tight. Stay tuned to see how it goes!
