It's all in the details. What is? The devil, of course.
This is very true of construction projects. A basic house frame, with walls, roof, doors and windows can go up in a matter of days - less if prefab - but getting the molding in place, the soffits, the window sills, the gratings, the floor transitions, and every little detail finished just right can take a lifetime. Or so it seems.
We did some detail work recently. This included soffits for the fluorescenting lighting in the walk-by closet and in the water closet. These were actually fairly easy to construct out of MDF and attach to the ceiling with L-brackets. They help keep that fluorescent glare out of your eyes, but keep the articles in the closet well-lit.
And then there was the crazy idea that forced-air vents should be flush-mount to the floor, not protruding hideous metal things which were hard to clean and easy to trip on and just plain ugly.
Thus, we got the idea to make our own. Shocking, I know - us, making our own. I am sure you didn't see that coming.
We built our very own perfectly matched stranded bamboo floor vent covers by gluing together two pieces of floor boards and then notching out the vents with a router. Fun! And they nest just perfectly and look nearly seemless with the floor.
Of course, these photos show that we still have some detail work to go: the wall base molding is gapingly gone. And this leads us to wondering if we should make our own. Why? Well, because it costs in excess of $4/foot - linear foot. Four dollars! Bamboo is suppose to be cheap! So we may end up making our own out of the flooring we have leftover. We ran a test piece for feasibility and think we can probably fashion our own with the router and a quick coat of polyurethane for 1/3 to 1/6 the price.
