Molding, Part 1

Molding... a prime part of the "finish" work - i.e., the work contractors charge you the most for - the parts that can make a place sing or slump. We are working on door moldings. Now, as a normal human being, I've never really paid any attention to door molding. I honestly did not know it was a separate part from the door frame. Of course, I learned that many years ago when we put in a new kitchen door.

Here is what a door looks like without molding:
Hideous, right? I mean there's a huge gap between the door frame and the wall. (good news - I get to use the spray insulation again - lots of fun!) Also, the drywall is all uneven and rough. The whole thing just looks, well, "unfinished".

And so we are to the lumber store to get some nice lumber - this is not your 2x4 stud framing grade wood, but nice, vertical grain solid oak. Needs to be sanded and varnished, of course. We trimmed it to size and shaped it so it's rounded on one edge and sharp on the other where it meets the frame. And then we put it together with some glue and pocket screws.

Here are two frames setting up on the floor (you need to use your imagination to picture them upright):

Stay tuned for "Molding, Part 2" to see the molding in place!
