Sunday's Progress

Some say Sunday is a day of rest.

Wimps. We worked all day again and made some visible progress, which feels good. I put a second coat of primer on the walls. We picked up some paint chips so we can try to figure out what color to put on the walls... still not sure, but the walls are now ready and waiting for it. We hope to get it painted before putting in the floor. It is quite nice to paint without worry of getting paint on the floor!

After the priming, I did a finishing job on the Ipe: this involved a wet-sanding with the Penofen stain. Afterwards, I buffed the Ipe and it does look quite nice. So that's ready to go up any time now. See photo with helper cat and the short piece of un-varnished wood for comparison. But we'll wait until the tile and tub are in place to put it up.

Forgot to mention that on Saturday we did some reconnaissance on the cost of flooring. Prices seem to vary from $3.39 - $4.99 per square foot for stranded bamboo, which is what we think we'll put in. It looks not too dissimilar from the oak that is there already, is the strongest of the bamboo types, and of course is sustainable and still cheaper than many hardwoods. Labor charges also seemed to vary quite a bit, but we think we found a place that has both a good product and can install for not too much money. We'll try and get that sorted out soon after finishing the painting.

Dave spent the better part of Sunday working on/in the shower again. This time installing some of the Kerdi waterproof membrane (see orange stuff on shower walls at left). It has to be put up on the hardibacker with thinset. A very thin layer of thinset. We'll put the "Kerdi" all the way up the main shower wall, including the shower niches, and up to the window on the far wall. It is also on the tub surround and will go on the shower foam inset on the floor, too. In this way a completely waterproof area enclosure is created. Then the tile will go on top of this. Glass will enclose the rest of the shower. And of course the tub wall will be the beautiful Ipe, which will also match the tub floor. Thus, my work sanding and staining is not done yet...
