A problem with a gardens can be cats. This is especially true if you happen to have a cat - the kind of cat that insists on going outside. The kind of cat that more or less is in charge of our household. We call her, when she's not getting into trouble, Bastet.
So we need a way to keep her out of the garden. Cat poop is basically toxic material. There is no known safe disposal. Seriously, look it up. Yet, we still need relatively easy access and we do not want to hurt her. Thus, we invested in: The Scarecrow! Behold:
The "scarecrow" is a motion-sensitive sprinkler. It's really quite cool. Similar to a motion-sensing light or alarm, this device triggers when it senses movement and then sprays water for about 15-20 seconds. It can spray really far, too. We think the sound alone is enough to scare her. We doubt she has ever gotten wet from it. So far, it seems pretty effective. It is also keeping some large birds out of the yard. I am not sure if that is good or bad, but probably good. We want to encourage humming birds, but not mean bluebirds.
