Noise!

Well, we're back at it. Hoping to complete the guest bedrooms (or his & her offices?) next - two small rooms, where we need to install new windows (one where no window existed before), add plywood for earthquake safety, install all new electrical, insulation, flooring, drywall, the works.

Thus, we're bringing out all our old favorite tools, and a few new ones! One new one is the SPL Meter on my iPhone - it measures the sound level. Here is a measurement of the decibel readings from various tools:

cordless drill 75 dB
cordless impact driver 84
shop vac 80
hammer on chisel 75
hammering tacks 60-70
sawzall 90
skil saw 90
jamb saw 90
circular saw 90

The new tools:
air compressor 105dB (first one louder than BART)
nail gun 95 (peak short burst)

So what have we learned? Interestingly, all the various types of saws were about the same noise level, possibly because we were cutting the same thing - wood framing. The shop vac is possibly quieter than our regular vacuum, although I haven't measure that, yet. Nearly all the tools, with the exception of the air compressor, were not as loud as riding the BART in the transbay tube, which measured 100dB!

Lesson to all: wear ear protection when working with power tools! And also when riding BART!
